Minutes September 4th Meeting

Twelve members of the Silver Creek Basket Guild meet on September 4th, 2008. There were no guests. Marlene reported no expenses so the balance remains at $376.14.

Old Business

Members were reminded that dues of $15 are due in September.

Due to the stormy weather on July 11th only one brave soul, Marty, ventured out to Stephanie's house for the summer weave.

Fall Weave Workshop
October 11th was decided to be the date for the Fall Weave. Darleen offered to check the church for availability. (Update 9/6- please note the church is not available and we are exploring another location or changing the workshop to 10/18 ) Judy and Stephanie will be offering two baskets: Zeus by Debbie Hurd and Fancy Laundry by Marolynne Huber. Costs are about $20 and $25 ( because of handles) respectively. Several color options of space dyed reed will be available for Zeus. It was decided to order pizza for lunch but members are welcome to bring their own sack lunch. The workshop will start at 9AM.

JoAnn discussed the preparation of gourds for the October "Gourd Fun" guild meeting on October 2nd. She brought several gourds from her collection for us to look at. JoAnn had several handouts which she asked to be posted on the blog. Remember you must have your gourd cleaned, stained and holes drilled before the meeting.

New Business

JoAnn got "addicted" to the Christmas basket that Darleen want to make and brought 3 examples, in three sizes no less. The basket is called "Holly's Basket" and is designed by Suzanne Hickey. We will be weaving the basket in November and braiding the border in December. JoAnn's husband will photograph the baskets and email them to Darleen so they can be posted on the blog. It was decided to let all members find their own beads for the project. The "holly" beads and green "leaf" curls are added at the end. The pattern says you will need 22 red beads for the large basket. The beads need to be threaded on #2 round reed.

Marlene passed out flyers for her Mariane Park Fall Classes. The first is 3 Monday's, October 13- 27 in Green Lake, the basket is a beautiful hearth style with braided handle- nice for holding a casserole. Dawn reported she has 13 signed up for a Beginner's Market Basket in Princeton. Due to a bureaucracy change at Moraine Park, instructors can no longer collect money. So, there are no longer any supply costs for the classes. TOTAL costs are $28.26 for the 3 nights. ( or $4 if over 62 years of age) WOW what a bargain..... we are now weaving baskets that can compete with Wal-Mart prices! The whole class list will be on the blog.

Guild Programs

Programing for 2009 is open starting in January. There was a suggestion or redoing some of the baskets we have woven previously. Specifically the little basket Linda taught many years ago, Small Christi with the wrapped coil rim. If you have something you would like to lead, email one of the officers or bring it to any of our guild meetings.
Show and Share

Many, many baskets from those woven on sticks to a beautiful Adirondack backpack were viewed during show and share. ( in other words, there were so many baskets I forgot to count them!)
Weaving

Members then worked on their "Nature Baskets". Lots of interesting yarns, branches, vines, pods, shells and grasses were available for all to use. Most found the free form weaving rather fun and many beautiful baskets were finished or close to being done. We all admired Elizabeth's as it was done in grays with lots of birch bark accents. It even had a birch bark rim. Thank so much to everyone who brought in materials to share. If you finished your "Nature Basket" at home please bring it back so we can all see the finished product.

I think the comment that sums up the night was from Sue who was hesitant in weaving the basket and at first reluctant in helping me lead this project. Sue said, " I think I want to weave another one". Thanks for helping me Sue! It was a fun night.
