January 8, 2009 Minutes

Minutes January 8, 2009

Seven members and one guest attended the January 8th meeting of the Silver Creek Basket Guild. Before the meeting was called to order, members reminisced about Shirley. Marlene passed around a memorial card from the funeral which will be placed in the club’s records.

The meeting was called to order by Darleen. Marlene reported a balance of $436.14, but is expecting a bill from Dawn for the plant sent to Shirley's funeral. Darleen read the minutes from December 2008.

Marty, Judy, and JoAnn all had baskets to show and share.

Old Business
Darleen contacted East Troy Basketry and reported the guild voted to cancel any further planning of a spring workshop with Eileen.

Members present read and suggested changes to the guidelines. Marlene is making the final copy and it will be sent separately for member’s to review and finalize at the February meeting. Major changes include switching from 5 officers to 4, switching officer elections to June and officer terms of 2 years.

The major discussion surrounded ways to encourage members to run for an office. It was mentioned the current officers have been running the club for many years. Suggestions included; officers not paying dues, electing two co-presidents, having no president; the person leading the basket also would lead the meeting and having the vice-president become the president after two years. Marlene spoke of the need for a good president to keep the group on track during the business portion of the meeting (so we would have time to weave the project).

New Business
Dawn has received a thank you note from Shirley’s daughter.

Darleen relayed comments from several members who had gone to Messiah’s Chili Luncheon and noticed that baskets were priced quite low and larger baskets (some even left over from the previous year) had not been sold. Since the smaller baskets were selling, it was suggested that perhaps we should all make simple, smaller baskets and NOT fill the baskets with theme items for our donations. The church is a wonderful meeting place and we all want our donations to do the most good. Marlene suggested rather than donating baskets to sell, we could just give baskets to the church’s shut-in’s similar to what East Troy Basketry does. The topic was tabled as we look for someone in the group to discuss this with the church; perhaps a guild member who is also a church member.

Monthly Project Review

February is a UFO month, bring any unfinished item you want to work on. We will also vote on the Guidelines.

In, March Dawn will be leading “Small Christi”. Linda Taylor led this 4 1/2”W by 2 3/4”H basket with a wrapped coiled rim about 3 years ago. Darleen showed the Christi she made accented with small glass beads on #1 round reed using macramé cord as a lasher.

Marty showed a beautiful, small square basket with a colored twill design in the base that she is considering leading in April.

Judy brought the basket she will be leading in May. The pattern “Sweetie” by Candace Katz can be seen HERE. If that won't work on your computer, just google “bases to weave” and click on free patterns. Judy will provide the bases and beads for us to purchase.

Marlene led her “Thrift Store Small Wall Basket”. ( I had to ask... Marlene saw one like it unpriced at a thrift store. So instead of asking for a price, she went home and wove one!) Almost all members got their baskets close to completion or at least up to the rim. Thank you Marlene, it is a cute little basket and we all had fun weaving it.

Respectfully submitted,
Darleen
