JoAnn says 1/4" flat could be substituted for the 7mm reed. She will be bringing colored reed to the meeting. In addition, she has ceramic tulips (the buckles) available for $3.50 and Tulip Handles for $3.00

From 1/2" FF cut 7 spokes 29" long and 8 spokes 26" long.
From 1/2" FF cut 7 spokes 29" long and 8 spokes 26" long. Soak briefly. Mark center of the handle and a few spokes.
Lay 3 of the 29" spokes horizontally UNDER the handle, and 4 of the 29" spokes on top of the handle. Weave in vertically 4 spokes on each side of the handle. Adjust base to measure 6" wide and 8" long. Upset the spokes and weave the following rows start and stop:
3 rows 7mm FF
2 rows 1/4" FF dyed
20 rows 7mm FF
Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO outside and 1/2" FF inside, seagrass between rims, and lash with 11/64" FO.
If you plan to stain your basket, do it before tying on the Tulip Basket Buckle ®. Use #2R dyed green for stem and grass. Decorate with tulips(available at craft stores).
